Choosing a molded pulp factory is not like ordering from a catalog. Ask for the mold timeline breakdown: Design review (2 days) → CNC machining (2-3 days) → Trial press + sample (1-2 days) → Adjustment (0-1 day). If they can't give you this breakdown, they don't have a defined process — and you'll be the one paying for their disorganization.

Ask directly: "Can you send me a copy of your ISO 9001 certificate — with your company name on it?" A factory that holds its own certifications has passed the audit. A trading company that borrows its supplier's certs hasn't. This single question eliminates a surprising number of suppliers.
5. The Factory Visit Test
This is the simplest test and the hardest to fake. Ask: "I'd like to schedule a video call from your production floor. Can we do that this week?"
A factory that says yes immediately and shows you live production — machinery running, workers present, your product category visible — is real. A factory that needs "a few days to arrange" or offers only "our showroom" is likely a trading company. You're not buying from their showroom; you're buying from their production line.
6. Quality Rejection Rate
Every factory has rejects. The question is how many and what happens to them. Industry average for molded pulp is 2-5% rejection rate. Top-tier factories operate at under 2%.
Ask: "What was your internal quality rejection rate last quarter?" Then ask: "What happens to rejected units — are they recycled back into production?" If they say "zero rejects," they're either not inspecting or not being honest. Both are disqualifying. Recycled rejects are standard and actually a good sign — it means they have a closed-loop process.
7. Mold Ownership: Who Keeps the Tooling?
This is the most overlooked question in custom packaging procurement — and the one that creates the most expensive lock-in. Some factories retain ownership of the mold after production. This means if you ever want to switch suppliers, you pay for a new mold — $800 to $3,000 down the drain.
Get it in writing: "Mold and tooling are the property of the buyer. Upon request, the mold will be returned to the buyer or destroyed with photographic proof within 30 days." If they won't put this in the contract, they're planning to keep you as a captive customer.
