Recycled Fiber Blends in Molded Pulp: Strength, Color, and the 100% Myth
Molded pulp commonly uses 70–100% recycled fiber, but the fiber source decides the properties. Old corrugated containers (OCC) give strength; mixed paper lowers cost and brightness.
The Scenario: A brand that wanted 100% recycled — and got weak trays
A cosmetics brand specified 100% recycled content. The first production run produced trays with poor edge crush and visible speckle, and drop tests failed.
Pain Points
- The recycled blend lacked long virgin fibers, cutting strength;
- Speckle from mixed paper hurt the premium finish;
- The 100% claim was met, but the part was unusable.
The Solution: Blending for the spec, not the slogan
The fix was an honest blend spec: high recycled content where it counts, virgin fiber where strength demands:
1. OCC-based blends Old corrugated fiber gives strength at 80%+ recycled content.
2. Virgin top layer A thin virgin layer restores surface smoothness and brightness.
3. Strength-first spec Edge crush and drop test per ISTA set the blend, not the slogan.
The Result: Strong, smooth, and still 85% recycled
The final blend used 85% recycled OCC fiber with a virgin surface layer. Drop tests passed and the speckle disappeared, and the brand's claim changed from 100% to verified 85%.
