Can molded pulp trays support very heavy automotive components?

Heavy parts are packed in thicker, denser molded pulp with structural ribs, stacking feet, and stronger flanges designed to carry the load. When parts sit in returnable or single-use trays stacked several layers high, the design must account for both the part weight and the stack pressure above it. Share the exact part weight, dimensions, and stack height with the molder so they can engineer the correct wall profile and run compression testing.

Is molded pulp clean enough for automotive parts that need a clean environment?

Yes, when the right grade is specified. Molded pulp is naturally low-lint compared to loose fill, and suppliers can offer dust-controlled production, sealed poly or film liners, and cleanroom-compatible handling for parts that must arrive free of fibers and debris. Loose paper dust and shedding are controlled during the molding process, and any cutting or trimming is done to avoid leaving loose particles in the cavity.

Will molded pulp cause rust or corrosion on metal parts?

Standard molded pulp holds a small amount of moisture and can contain trace salts or corrosives from recycled fiber, so bare machined steel needs extra care. Options include specifying virgin fiber or a cleaner furnish, drying the parts before packing, adding VCI (vapor corrosion inhibitor) paper or film, and using a barrier coating inside the cavity. Can automotive molded pulp packaging be reused or recycled?

Yes. Thick, durable molded pulp dunnage can be designed for multiple trips between supplier and plant when handled correctly, and single-use trays are curbside recyclable with paper or returnable through the molder's take-back program.
