Molded Pulp Color and Dyeing FAQ: Colorfastness, Process, and Custom Shades
How is molded pulp colored?
Color is usually added at the pulp stage: liquid dye or pigment is dosed into the fiber slurry before forming, so the color runs through the whole wall instead of sitting on the surface. A second option is surface tinting or a sprayed coating after molding for special effects. Pulp-stage dyeing is the most common because it gives even, consistent color with no peeling or chipping.
Is the color on molded pulp colorfast and stable over time?
Dyes added to the fiber slurry are quite stable because the color is locked inside the molded structure, but all molded pulp fades gradually under strong UV light, and wet or humid conditions can affect some dyes. For outdoor, long-display, or repeated-contact applications, choose lightfast pigments instead of basic dyes and ask the supplier for their colorfastness test data. Darker shades generally hide any slight fading better than pastels.
Are there food-grade dyes for molded pulp that touches food?
Yes. For food-contact molded pulp, pigments and dyes must comply with the same food-contact rules as the fiber itself, such as EU 1935/2004 and US FDA regulations for food-contact materials. Reputable suppliers use food-contact-approved dyes and can provide a compliance statement for colored products. Never assume a decorative dye is food-safe; always confirm the specific pigment list with the supplier.
Can I get a custom brand color or Pantone match on molded pulp?
Custom colors are possible but hard to match precisely to a Pantone swatch, because the natural fiber tone, surface texture, and drying process shift the final shade. The practical route is to send a reference sample, then approve a physical color sample produced on the actual fiber blend before mass production. Large orders make custom dyeing economical; for small runs, standard shades are cheaper and faster.
Does dyeing change the strength or recyclability of molded pulp?
Properly selected dyes do not weaken molded pulp, because they are added in small amounts at the slurry stage and do not attack the fiber bonds. Recyclability is generally unaffected since the colored product still goes into the paper stream, though heavily dyed or coated grades are more practical to recycle when the color is light and the dye is standard. If compostability matters for your market, pick dye systems that are accepted in compostable packaging schemes.
