Can molded pulp grow mold in ocean transit?
Yes, when conditions allow. Molded pulp is fiber, and mold needs moisture, warmth, and a food source — all present when pulp ships in a container that cycles between warm days and cool nights, producing condensation. Keeping the pulp dry at packing and controlling container humidity are the prevention keys.
How do exporters prevent mold on pulp packaging?
Prevention is a four-layer system: dry the pulp to low moisture content before packing, add a moisture-barrier coating for humid destinations, pack with desiccant and vapor barriers inside the carton, and manage container ventilation and temperature to avoid condensation. Each layer compounds the protection.
What moisture content should molded pulp have before shipping?
Export-grade pulp packaging should be dried to a low, agreed moisture content before packing — typically well below the equilibrium it would reach in a humid warehouse.
