The parts are recyclable fiber and typically nest or stack flat to cut inbound shipping and warehouse volume.
How does molded pulp protect appliance surfaces from scratches?
Protection comes from a smooth, dense contact surface on the molded part plus a pocket fit that holds the appliance without relative movement. Dense contact pads are designed against painted or coated surfaces, and clearance is engineered elsewhere. Fit quality is what prevents fiber-to-surface rubbing during vibration — and it is validated in the transit test, not assumed.
Is molded pulp strong enough for heavy appliances like washing machines?
Yes, when engineered for the load. Corner posts and base trays for large appliances use thick walls, dense fiber, and ribbed columns sized for the appliance weight, and the system is validated with compression plus ISTA-style transit tests that include the stacking and handling loads of the real distribution channel.
What parts make up a molded pulp appliance packaging system?
A typical system has three engineered components: corner posts that absorb drop energy at the cabinet corners, a base tray that carries the appliance weight and spreads it across the pallet, and a top cap that stabilizes stacking and protects the top panel. Air conditioners and smaller appliances often use cradles or trays that lock the unit's profile instead.
What drop heights should appliance packaging be tested at?
Drop height follows the ISTA procedure matched to the distribution channel and package weight. Heavier appliances shipped as freight are tested from lower heights than parcel-carrier shipments, commonly ranging from around 30 cm up to about 76 cm depending on the procedure. The channel and procedure should be agreed with the buyer before validation testing starts.
Why do appliances get scratched even with protective packaging?
Most transit scratches come from movement: the product shifts inside the packaging and rubs against it, or loose accessories move around in the box. Is molded pulp appliance packaging recyclable for consumers?
Yes — molded pulp is curbside-recyclable fiber, which removes the foam-recycling problem consumers face with EPS. Barrier coatings are designed to keep the part recyclable in normal paper streams.
