What is an ISTA drop test?
ISTA drop tests are controlled procedures that drop a conditioned, packaged product from specified heights and orientations — face, edge, and corner — to simulate the handling hazards of real distribution. The package is evaluated for damage and the product for protection against the procedure's agreed pass criteria.
What drop heights apply to molded pulp packaging?
Drop height depends on the ISTA procedure and package weight. Lighter parcels are typically tested from higher drops, commonly around 30–76 cm (12–30 in) in single-package procedures, while heavier industrial loads use lower heights. The applicable procedure and height should be agreed with the buyer and stated in the test plan before validation begins.
Why do molded pulp parts need conditioning before drop tests?
Molded pulp is a fiber material that absorbs moisture, and humid fiber loses stiffness. A part tested dry can behave very differently at 60–80% relative humidity. Conditioning the package at a stated temperature and humidity before dropping is what makes the result represent the real supply chain rather than the lab.
How do I design molded pulp packaging to pass drop tests?
Design for the orientations the product is weakest to. Lock the product in a pocket with standoff so it never touches the box wall, concentrate wall thickness and ribs at corners and edges where drops land, and add controlled crush zones that absorb energy by progressive collapse. Then validate on prototype parts and tune the geometry where the first drop fails.
Why did my molded pulp part crack on a corner drop?
Corner cracks usually mean the corner geometry is too thin or unribbed for the impact energy, or the rib orientation runs the wrong way. Add corner mass and gussets that distribute the impact, and check whether the drop height or package weight class matches the procedure actually being used.
How much standoff should there be between product and box wall?
Standoff defines how much crush travel the molded pulp has before forces reach the product. The right distance depends on product fragility, drop height, and cushioning material — typically several millimeters for small consumer goods and more for heavier or more fragile products. It is validated by testing, not chosen by rule of thumb alone.
Which ISTA procedure should I use for my product?
Choose the procedure that matches the actual distribution channel — parcel carriers, less-than-truckload freight, or retail distribution each have different hazard profiles and procedures. Applying a parcel-carrier procedure to palletized freight over-tests the package, while a freight procedure under-tests a parcel program. Confirm the channel with your customer before freezing the test plan.
What is the test-to-tooling loop for molded pulp?
Prototype parts from soft tooling, run the agreed ISTA procedure on conditioned samples, photograph and diagnose the failure mode, tune wall thickness, ribs, or standoff in the tool design, then re-test until the weak orientation passes. This loop is how drop-test learning reaches production tooling instead of staying on the test bench.
